SAGE runs three ways. Pick the model that matches your team's privacy, cost, and collaboration needs — and switch later without rewriting your data.

The three models

Available

Solo Local

Individual contributors

SAGE runs entirely in your browser. Your data never leaves the device — there is no server, no account, and nothing to set up. Best for trying SAGE on a real program before involving anyone else.

The trade-off: Total privacy, single device, no collaboration.

Coming Q2 2026

Team — Dataverse

Teams already on Microsoft 365

SAGE stores your team's data in Dataverse — a true relational database — inside your own Microsoft tenant. Authentication uses your existing corporate identity (Entra ID), and per-record permissions, audit, and governance work through Microsoft's native controls. No new infrastructure for your team to operate.

The trade-off: Enterprise-grade database, with the trade-off of per-user licensing.

Planned

Team — Self-Hosted

Teams not on Microsoft 365, or with strict data sovereignty needs

For teams in environments without Microsoft 365 — or for whom data sovereignty requires owning the database outright — SAGE will run on standard Postgres with a pluggable authentication provider, deployable to your cloud or on-premises infrastructure.

The trade-off: Maximum control, with the trade-off of operating the database yourself.

Privacy, in plain terms

Your data lives where you put it.

In your browser, in your Microsoft tenant, or on your infrastructure — depending on the deployment model. Never on a Smoothgrain server.

Only the people you authorize see it.

SAGE inherits your existing access controls — your identity provider's authentication, your database's row-level security, and your tenant's conditional access — depending on the deployment model. Browser-only in Solo Local.

What we don't do.

We don't operate an application database holding your records. We don't proxy your data through our infrastructure. We don't sell, share, or train on your data.

Common questions

Where does my SAGE data live?
It depends on the deployment model. Solo Local keeps everything in your own browser. Team — Dataverse stores everything in your own Microsoft tenant. Team — Self-Hosted stores everything on infrastructure you operate. In none of these models does Smoothgrain hold or have access to your team's data.
Can I switch deployment models later?
Yes. SAGE is built around a storage-adapter design, so the application logic does not change between models. Migrating from Solo Local to a team workspace, or between team deployment models, is an export and import — not a re-implementation.
Does Smoothgrain see my company's data?
No. The hosted SAGE web app is a static site — JavaScript that runs in your browser. In every deployment model, the application talks directly to your chosen data store (your browser, your tenant, or your infrastructure). Smoothgrain operates no application database and receives no copy of your data.
How do users sign in to a Team workspace?
Team — Dataverse uses your existing Microsoft Entra ID, so users log in with their normal corporate accounts. Team — Self-Hosted supports your choice of identity provider (Entra ID, Okta, Google Workspace, and others). In both cases, SAGE inherits your existing access controls — multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, and conditional access policies all apply normally.
What if my company doesn't use Microsoft?
Solo Local is available today and requires nothing from IT. The Team — Self-Hosted model will support organizations on other identity providers and database platforms when it ships.
Is SAGE free?
The Solo tier is free — a single practitioner running one active program in their browser, with full access to the SAGE methodology, all BEARINGS artifact templates, and the TAP Log. Team, Program, and Enterprise tiers are paid per user, billed annually. See the homepage pricing section for current rates.
How does Sage pricing work alongside my deployment cost?
Sage charges a per-user product fee (Team or Program tier). Your team separately pays for the underlying deployment — Microsoft Power Apps Premium licensing for Team — Dataverse, or your hosting and database cost for Team — Self-Hosted. The two costs are independent and stack: Sage product + your infrastructure.
